Jivitputrika Vrat, also known as Jitiya Vrat, is a sacred fast in Hinduism, which mothers conduct for the long life, healthy life, and prosperity of their children. This fast is especially popular in Bihar, Jharkhand, and some parts of Uttar Pradesh. It is practiced on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month; it is considered to be the best fast for the happiness and protection of children.
Jitiya Vrat is mythologically associated with Lord Jimutvahana. Jimutvahana was the mythical king who prevented the evil of the Naga dynasty by his bravery and sacrifice. In the myths, he had given up his life saving the snakes from the atrocities of Garuda. And so this fasting is associated with protection and long life of children. It is said in Bhavishya Purana that Shiva had told Mother Parvati that the mothers who keep this fast, God himself protects their children and all difficulties and obstacles in the child’s life are destroyed.
Jivitputrika Vrat is a three-day affair. It begins with “Nahay Khay”. Women take a bath and eat pure food. Then, on the second day, women keep a Nirjala fast, which means they should not drink even water. Considerably, this is an untakable fast as women abstain from eating and drinking anything throughout the day and night for their children.
On the third day of the fast, fasting women do Parana, which means end the fast. During this time, Lord Jimutvahana is properly worshiped during puja. Women pray to God with fruits, flowers, lamps, and incense for the long life of children. Today, the women offer Arghya to the Sun God and pray that their children always remain happy and safe.
In the year 2024, Jitiya Vrat will date on September 25. The Ashtami Tithi will begin at 12:38 pm on the 24th and end at 12:10 pm on September 25. After Udaya Tithi, the vet will be done on September 25. The Shubh Muhurta for Puja will be from 04:43 pm to 06:13 pm on September 25. The women can do Puja rituals during this time.
