Every year, 22nd September has been started to create awareness of rhino conservation. Rhino or “rhino” is a unique form of wildlife threatened directly by poisoning and smuggling of their horns. This day’s purpose is to save these rhinos from extinction and to encourage efforts for their conservation.
Then in 2010, WWF-South Africa did something for the day. They celebrated their first exposure to raising awareness of the growing threats on rhinos and calling for more efforts to save them. Now it is a global movement for countries, organizations, and individuals worldwide.
Rhino conservation is essential because the extinction of rhino species means that not only the other wildlife will be affected but will also affect the vegetation and environment adversely. Rhinos are culturally important too; their beauty and uniqueness attract us to the diversity of nature.
World Rhino Day 2024 Theme
Though the theme for this year is yet to be announced, like every year, this year too the theme will probably focus on major issues about rhino conservation such as poaching, protecting habitat, and global conservation efforts.
Varied events are conducted to celebrate this day and all the events vary from creating awareness to online discussions to seminars. People post on social media regarding the conservation of rhinos, and organizations also operate donation drives. Discussions, competitions, and exhibitions are also held in schools and colleges regarding the importance of rhino protection.
There are rhinos in India, specifically in Kaziranga National Park, Assam, which is said to have the existence of one-horned rhinos. There are many government and non-government organizations to keep them here so that this fabulous animal lives forever.
Rhinos are not just crucial in terms of the environment but also part of our cultural heritage. So, much more is to be done to save the same.
