The ‘World Bamboo Day’ is celebrated every year on 18 September. The purpose of this day is awareness about bamboo, its diversity, and its conservation. Not only does it contribute significantly to the income of the farmers but is also very vital from the point of view of environmental protection. It has been since then the day has been celebrated due to an initiation that started in the year 2009 in Bangkok, Thailand, and the 8th World Bamboo Congress declared ‘World Bamboo Day’.
‘World Bamboo Day’ was instituted in 2009. The observance was held in conjunction with the 8th World Bamboo Congress which was organized in Bangkok, Thailand. The congress was intended to highlight the economic, ecological, and cultural importance of bamboo. There are around 1500 types of bamboo that exist worldwide but only a handful of these are used by farmers. The highest-end objective of this day is to promote the preservation of bamboo and its application at all levels.
World Bamboo Day is an event that seeks to acquaint the world with the utility and importance of bamboo. The specialty of bamboo lies in the fact that it grows very fast and does not need any special fertilizer or mineral to grow it.
Bamboo is a fast-growing plant, which grows without harming the ecosystem. It can be used in environmental protection, urbanization, and rural development. Bamboo is applied in construction materials, the paper industry, agriculture, crafts, and handicrafts. It’s also termed as ‘Green Gold’.
Today, another one of the important aims is that of inciting scientific research on the properties and uses of bamboo. The bamboo absorbs carbon dioxide and releases oxygen. Thus the atmospheric balance is maintained. The roots of bamboo along with increasing the depth of the soil prevent soil erosion. From the economic aspect, too, bamboo is essential since it grows very fast and contains many varied uses. Bamboo products are used in construction, crafts, and handicrafts and in the paper industry.
World Bamboo Day not only provides an opportunity to recognize the importance of this unique plant but also becomes a great tool for its promotion, conservation, and sustainable development. Considering its environmental and economic benefits, September 18 is indeed a very good day to raise awareness and promote the use of bamboo. While celebrating this day, we should make ourselves aware of the importance of bamboo and continue our commitment to its conservation and sustainable development.
