Malaysian Human Resources Ministry announced that two major public holidays will be enjoyed by Malaysian citizens on 16 September 2024. Since Malaysia Day and Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday have fallen on the same date, the government has given two holidays.
A week ago, the government said that since these two holidays had fallen together, no additional holidays would be given. But now the government has made this change, respecting public sentiment so that people may get the benefit of two public holidays.
Malaysia Day falls on the formation of Malaysia, which will be on 16 September 2024. This is a compulsory public holiday that shall not be varied or replaced by any other day. The birthday of Prophet Muhammad also falls on the same day, declared as a public holiday, but is not compulsory. The option to observe this holiday has been given especially to all employers in the private sector.
Malaysia Day is celebrated on 16 September 1963 with the eventual establishment of the Federation of Malaysia. It is the day when the Federation of Malaya, the then British colony of Singapore, and the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak came together to form the wider federation. However, Singapore broke away from the Federation two years later on 9 August 1965.
Malaysia Day became the country’s holiday in 2010. It was the former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who announced the day as a public holiday. Malaysia Day involves ceremonial activities like parades depicting the spirit of Malaysia in terms of unity and independence. The day reminds Malaysians of the struggle and independence won.
The Government has taken this step given public demand. This change will provide a longer weekend to the citizens, and the employers were urged to make the necessary arrangements so that all Malaysians can get the benefit of these two big holidays.
