Samveda Upkarma or Samveda Upakarma is the main ritualistic observance of the Brahmin community following the Samveda. It falls every year a day after Shravan Amavasya. In 2024, Samveda Upkarma will fall on the 6th of September. The festival predominantly falls in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.
Samveda Upkarma is a holy tradition of the Brahmin community. It includes the replacement ceremony of the Upanayana or the sacred thread. This comes under the Vedic rites of passage and refers to returning to a state of purity and religious duties. It is followed by the Samveda Upakarma Brahmins among the Brahmins, especially followers of Samveda, which is one of the four Vedas.
On the day of Samveda Upkarma, people belonging to the Brahmin community changed their Yagyopaveet, which means the sacred thread. This thread also has different names in different languages, such as in Malayalam, it is called ‘Poonol’, in Telugu, it is known as ‘Jandhyamu’ and in Kannada, this is termed as ‘Janivara’. This holy thread shows that how much you are concerned about your religious rites and rituals.
It normally takes place at a temple or on the banks of a holy river or pond, though it may take place inside one’s home nowadays. Special defecation and worship methods are followed, especially by the Brahmin community, on this day. After Samveda Upkarma, Gayatri Japam also follows on the next day.
Samveda Upkarma is done differently compared to Yajurveda and Rigveda Upkarma. Followers of Yajurveda and Rigveda perform Upkarma on the Shravan Purnima day popularly known as Avani Avittam. The process of Samveda Upkarma is very elaborate, special types of defecation, and rituals are followed.
Samaveda Upkarma: It is the most prominent and special occasion in South India, where the occasions bear special religious and cultural significance. On the other hand, in North India, this ritual is not practiced among the Brahmin community. However, some priests and saints do observe this with certain denominations.
