One of the important festivals of Jainism is Paryushan Parv, which is an important period of spiritual contemplation and self-restraint. This festival lasts for about eight to ten days and is a time for the Jain community to understand the purity of the soul and the depth of religion. Paryushan festival concludes with Samvatsari, which is celebrated on the last day of Paryushan. In many places, it is also called Dheeraj Parv.

Paryushan festival is celebrated by two major sects of Jainism – Shvetambara and Digambar. Shvetambara Jain community celebrates this festival for eight days, while Digambar Jain community celebrates it for ten days. The main objective of this festival is to focus on purity of the soul, forgiveness, and penance.

During the Paryushan period, the Jain community emphasizes self-study and fasting. This is the time to understand the purity of the soul and the reality of life. During this time people ask for forgiveness from each other and reflect on their deeds. Jain followers engage in religious rituals, worship, discourses, meditation, and sadhana.

The word ‘Paryushan’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘paryushit’, which means ‘to be accomplished’ or ‘to be complete’. Paryushan means ‘coming together’, which signifies the coming closer of the soul through spiritual practices. The festival originated from the traditions and philosophy of the Jain community.

It is believed that this festival was established by the 24th Tirthankara Lord Mahavira so that the Jain community could indulge in deep meditation and self-restraint. In ancient times, Jain monks used to stay at one place during the monsoon and used this period for spiritual development, which is known as ‘Paryushan’.

Paryushan festival begins with the Kalpasutra ritual, in which sacred texts are read aloud. After this, there are daily discourses, which guide individuals towards spiritual growth. A major ritual of this festival is Pratikraman, which involves reflecting on past deeds, asking for forgiveness from others and granting forgiveness to all living beings. It is a time for Jains to re-examine their values, thoughts, and actions.

This year, Paryushan will begin on August 31, 2024, and end on September 7, 2024. During these eight days, Jains aim to rejuvenate their soul through introspection and self-purification. This time focuses on non-violence, truth, and self-control.
