Indian religious traditions establish some social and spiritual values. Fasts and festivals have a special place in them. Shitala Satam is also one of the significant fasts, celebrated with great fanfare, especially in North India. This fast is done in the reverence of Goddess Sheetala, also popular as Mata Shitala, Mata Sita, or Varsha Mata. The primary purpose of this day is to seek protection from diseases, for which people go to the blessing of Mata Sheetala.
Sunday, 25 August will be the festival of Shitala in 2024. The auspicious time for the worship of Shitala Mata on this day will be from 05:36 am to 06:24 pm. Saptami Tithi will start at 05:30 am on August 25 and end at 03:39 am on August 26.
In the Vrat Katha of Sheetala Saptami, a village woman along with her two daughters-in-law features. They are happily observing the fast of Sheetla Saptami and eat cold food the next day. Both the daughters-in-law become pregnant, but they get upset to have the desire to eat fresh food and ignore Mata Shitala. Because of this, the newborn died. Later, they meet two women, who are the incarnations of Mata Shitala, who will give life to their babies. From this incident, they begin to believe in the worship of Mata Sheetla, and the worship with devotion is made in the village.
Shitala is the biggest religious festival of worship for good health and prosperity with the blessings of Mata Sheetla. This fast is particularly celebrated with much pomp in Gujarati society, and there are deep religious beliefs and traditions attached to it.
