21st August 2024 will be celebrated as Senior Citizens Day. This is in honour of our seniors, who have laboriously made us learn so much by merely following their lifelong experiences. But let’s take it lightly.
This Day was instituted by President Ronald Reagan way back in 1988, who proclaimed August 21 as National Senior Citizens Day.
There are about 47 million elderly people in the US, which will double by 2060. That means that more elderly people will benefit us with their experiences and knowledge. Now, imagine all those people who experienced the technologies that we are allowed to use. Ever wondered what the world would look like without a Smartphone? Perhaps grandmothers still have stories of old times when there were no mobiles and letter-post was the norm.
The initiative taken by President Reagan to recognize Senior Citizens Day made our society realize the importance of the elderly. He became President at the age of 69 and completed his life’s journey at the age of 93. The man not only challenged his age but served as a perfect example of how to stay active even with age. If he were on social media today, perhaps his post would have read, “Age is just a number, and it is the experience which is the life-giving power in life.”
