The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed fines on Bank of India and Bandhan Bank for breaching rules. Bank of India has been fined Rs 1,40,76,000 for various non-compliance issues, while Bandhan Bank Ltd has been fined Rs 29.55 lakh for not following RBI directives.
Bank of India was penalized for not paying interest in certain term deposit accounts as per disclosed rates, levying SMS charges based on invalid numbers, and failing to reset interest rates as per guidelines. The bank also did not benchmark interest rates on certain loans to external rates and inaccurately reported data to CRILC and CICs.
Bandhan Bank Ltd was penalized for not complying with regulatory instructions/statutory provisions as per RBI’s supervisory findings. The penalties were imposed after considering the banks’ responses to the issues raised and are based on deficiencies in regulatory compliance, not on the validity of transactions.
The RBI clarified that the penalties are meant to address non-compliance issues and do not question the validity of transactions between the banks and their customers. The monetary penalties imposed are separate from any other actions RBI may take against the banks in the future.
