Agartala: According to the latest report by Rubber Board officials, Indian rubber prices have remained above international market prices for over a decade, with a 2% increase in natural rubber production in the last year. India’s rubber production has surpassed the previous year’s figures for the April-January period.
During April-January 2023-24, India’s rubber production reached 7,39,000 metric tonnes, showing a notable increase from the previous year. The country also witnessed a 5.4% rise in rubber consumption during the same period, touching 11,7900 metric tonnes.
Moreover, India imported 11.2% less natural rubber this year, totaling 4,10,770 metric tonnes from April to January 2023-24. The country’s rubber exports have been minimal due to unappealing relative prices in recent years.
Following a period of high prices, Indian sheet rubber prices have softened and are now below Bangkok prices as revealed in January 2024. This shift is attributed to supply shortages caused by wintering in Southeast Asian countries and adverse weather conditions in November-December.
To capitalize on market opportunities, the Executive Director of the Rubber Board, M. Vasanthagesan, will convene a meeting with rubber exporters and board companies in Kottayam (Kerala) on March 15. The focus will be on evaluating export prospects, particularly for various grades of sheet rubber.
In a significant development, the government is offering an incentive of 1.40% of Free On Board value for the export of sheet rubber under ‘the Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products Scheme’. The Rubber Board is actively promoting Indian rubber under the brand ‘Indian Natural Rubber’ to ensure quality certification for exported sheet rubber.
During the seventh edition of India Rubber Meet (IRM 2024) in Guwahati, it was declared that 70,000 hectares of land have been brought under rubber plantation through the INROAD project in northeastern states. The manufacturing industry has pledged investments worth Rs 1,000 crore for new plantations and quality improvement initiatives for natural rubber.
Tripura, currently cultivating natural rubber on 97,171.93 hectares of land, stands as the second-largest rubber-producing state in India after Kerala. The state annually produces 1,02,989 tonnes of rubber valued at Rs 1620 crore, highlighting its significant contribution to the industry.
